Isoparaffin is a carrier that can also be found in cosmetics. A carrier does just what it sounds like - it helps carry a product to a surface by thinning or thickening the formula or simply ensuring even distribution of the other ingredients in the formula. Without a carrier, the product would not work with the same consistency across a surface.

Dimethicone is a silicone film former that can also be found in skin lotions, bath soaps and shampoos. It creates a protective coating or shine on a surface. Sometimes referred to as “silicone oil,” dimethicone is the most widely used silicone polymer and is particularly known for its ability to smoothly coat a surface and leave it protected, without being sticky.

Octylphosphonic Acid is a phosphate and corrosion inhibitor. It helps keep contents fresh and prevent the erosion or rusting of a can or dispenser. It also helps keep metallic household surfaces such as faucets and drains free of corrosion. We know there are concerns about phosphates and their impact on waterways and surface water. However, Octylphosphonic Acid is used in low concentrations to limit the concentrations of total phosphate being used in SC Johnson products and potentially released to surface waters.

Nitrogen is a propellant used to dispense a product from a container. Nitrogen is a non-flammable, non-VOC compressed gas, used to replace hydrocarbons or chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in aerosol products. Nitrogen makes up more than 75% of the air we breathe.

Polysorbate 80 is an emulsifier that can also be found in moisturizers, makeup and shampoo. It helps bind ingredients together and keep a formula from separating. In fragranced products, it also helps ensure even distribution of the fragrance. Adding emulsifiers helps ensure that our products provide the same performance use after use. The food-grade version of Polysorbate 80 is one of the most common emulsifiers used in ice cream.

Sorbitan Oleate is an emulsifier that can also be found in moisturizers, hair-styling products and soaps. It helps bind ingredients together and keep a formula from separating. In fragranced products, it also helps ensure even distribution of the fragrance. Adding emulsifiers helps ensure that our products provide the same performance use after use.
Polydimethylsiloxane is a silicone film former that can also be found in lotions. It creates a protective coating or shine on a surface. This means that the surface has an added level of protection, and also has the shine that helps the surface look its best.
Aminomethyl Propanol is a pH adjuster that can also be found in lotions, hair and skin care products. It alters the pH of a product to improve stability. Every formula has an optimum pH to make it work best. For example, a formula that’s more acidic works better for soap scum removal. Its opposite, a formula that’s more alkaline, might be more effective as a carpet cleaner. We use pH adjusters to make sure we achieve the best pH for a particular job. Also, the pH of a formula can affect how long it lasts within a container – for example limiting its tendency to rust in a can.

Methylisothiazolinone is a preservative that can also be found in shampoos, skin care products and makeup. It helps maintain product quality and performance over time. Some people raise concerns about preservatives, because a small number of individuals have allergies to them just as some people have allergies to nuts or bees. But preservatives play a very important role in food, cosmetics and household products. Without preservatives, many products would not last more than a week or two before being contaminated by bacteria, mold or yeast. So, we feel the best choice is to add preservatives in the smallest effective quantity to protect our products, but to list these preservatives in our formulas so that those with allergies in the family can make informed choices.
