SC Johnson products are not formulated with these ingredients:

Hydrogenated Castor Oil is an emulsifier that helps bind ingredients together and keep a formula from separating. Over time, it is possible for formulas in a product to separate. Adding emulsifiers helps ensure that our products provide the same performance use after use. As a note, “hydrogenated” means formulated to include water. So, Hydrogenated Caster Oil is a mixture of caster oil and water.

Secondary Alcohol Ethoxylate is a cleaning agent that can be found in cleaners and detergents. It is also used in fermentation processes for brewing, paints and coatings, and paper and textile manufacturing. It’s often used, in very small quantities, as an emulsifier. This ingredient is widely used because it biodegrades relatively rapidly. As an emulsifier, it helps bind ingredients together and keep a formula from separating. Over time, it is possible for formulas in a product to separate. Adding emulsifiers helps ensure that our products provide the same performance use after use.
Nitrogen is a propellant used to dispense a product from a container. Nitrogen is a non-flammable, non-VOC compressed gas, used to replace hydrocarbons or chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in aerosol products. Nitrogen makes up more than 75% of the air we breathe.
(Helps create the spray of a product.)
Citric acid is a builder that can also be found in a wide array of household products including laundry detergents, shampoos and cleaners. Of course, citric acid is also found in citrus fruits, such as oranges, lemons and limes. It makes a product formula clean better by affecting the molecules in the formula so they work together better. Citric Acid can also be used as a pH adjuster that alters the pH of a product to improve stability. Every formula has an optimum pH to make it work best. For example, a formula that’s more acidic works better for soap scum removal. Its opposite, a formula that’s more alkaline, might be more effective as a carpet cleaner. We use pH adjusters to make sure we achieve the best pH for a particular job. Also, the pH of a formula can affect how long it lasts within a container – for example limiting its tendency to rust in a can. Citric Acid can also be used as a cleaning agent that removes dirt, or as a chelator.

Sodium Citrate is a builder that can also be found in various household products including shampoos, mascara and lipstick. It makes a product formula clean better by affecting the molecules in the formula so they work together better. It can also be used as a stabilizer that maintains the clarity of the product and protects its pH. The pH of a formula can affect how long it lasts within a container – for example limiting its tendency to rust in a can. To ensure product performance, it is important that product formulas maintain their stability over time.

Propylene Glycol is a solubilizer that can also be found in cosmetics, toothpaste, food and beer. It helps ensure even distribution of the ingredients throughout a product, to help it work better. It also can be used as an odor eliminator, as a cleaning agent that removes dirt, as a wetting agent, or as a carrier that enables delivery of the product to the surface. Propylene Glycol is sometimes confused with Ethylene Glycol, the sweet-tasting ingredient that can be used in air conditioning systems and antifreeze products, but it is a different ingredient and is not identified by any government regulatory agencies as a concern.

Methylisothiazolinone is a preservative that can also be found in shampoos, skin care products and makeup. It helps maintain product quality and performance over time. Some people raise concerns about preservatives, because a small number of individuals have allergies to them just as some people have allergies to nuts or bees. But preservatives play a very important role in food, cosmetics and household products. Without preservatives, many products would not last more than a week or two before being contaminated by bacteria, mold or yeast. So, we feel the best choice is to add preservatives in the smallest effective quantity to protect our products, but to list these preservatives in our formulas so that those with allergies in the family can make informed choices.
